September and October mean a really important time for the gardener. First leaves falling off trees herald the coming winter which one needs to get prepared for adequately.

September and October mean a really important time for the gardener. First leaves falling off trees herald the coming winter which one needs to get prepared for adequately.

It’s harvest time

September and October are first of all the period of the most abundant harvest. Early autumn is the period during which many varieties of apples and plums as well as root vegetables and nuts ripen.

It’s time to start planting

Apart from harvesting, one should also get down to planting flowers. In September, we should focus our attention on snowdrops, pheasant’s eyes, crocuses, tulips and hyacinths. Correct planting of those flowers will result in their blooming during spring months. Before planting, we should select appropriate flower bulbs. We should only plant large and undamaged flower bulbs which are in repose (i.e. they have no leaves or flowers). We plant bulbs with a spatula, delicately digging up the soil and planting the bulbs at the depth of more or less three times the length of the bulb being planted. Arrangement is also important – smaller bulbs need to be planted closer to one another while larger ones need to be planted farther from one another. In order to achieve the intended result, we need to water the bulbs until the very first ground frost. Once it has taken place, the planting site needs to be covered with peat or bark.

Flower beds cleaning

Early winter is also the best time to take care of your flower beds. The very first thing to be done is to remove the remnants of annual plants and deal with weeds which may have grown in between our plants. We also need to dig the soil of our flower beds thoroughly. This will aerate the soil and ensure better growth of our plants in spring. To dig the soil, we need to use a bracket or a spade,we also need to remember that the soil may not be raked or levelled. This is the job that the coming rains and frost will do. Once we have dug through the soil, we need to fill it up with a fertilizer. It is best to use natural products such as compost or manure.

Other cleaning work

Our garden will gradually become covered with more and more fallen leaves. We need to remove them scrupulously and in an ongoing manner; it is best to use a rake , in order to ensure that the soil has uninterrupted contact with air. This applies to both your flower beds and your lawn. We also need to remove sick and withered parts of our perennials, and we need to prune tree and bush branches with pruning shears. We also need to burn down all the plants and sprouts showing symptoms of plant diseases so that we can avoid spreading of any diseases.

September and October garden cleaning work is an obligatory element of each and every gardener’s agenda. Although such work requires quite a lot of work effort and energy; it ensures achievement of the intended result in spring so we need to carry it out with due diligence.
